Why door closes by itself

With a hammer, tap the hinge pin midway along its length, to give it a slight bend. Reinstall the hinge pin. You will find it will resist a little, but tap it almost all the way in. Leave a slight gap in case you need to get it back out for further adjustment. Try the door. The door should no longer move itself. If a door closes by itself partially or all the way, it's likely that it is no longer plumb, which means the door and frame are awkwardly tilted.

Changes in weather and the settling of the house can cause your door to hang slightly crooked, although not enough for you to see. While you can buy a door stop from virtually anywhere or use anything place in front of the door or wedge underneath it as temporary fix, you may want a more permanent solution. Try the following easy fixes to get your door to hang straight and stop closing on its own. Place a large nail or small screwdriver on the bottom of the center hinge pin of your door.

Tap it with a hammer, forcing the nail out the top of the hinge. If your door has only two hinges, close the door and hammer a small wood shim near the top on the doorknob side of the door, between the door and the frame. Tap out the hinge pin of the top hinge. Locate some shims or scrap pieces of wood you can use to gently slide under the door at its lower corner under the door handle.

This important step prevents stress on the door and its hinges as you begin to remove one of the hinge pins. Use a hammer and a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully drive the top hinge pin up and out of the top hinge. Take the hinge pin and hammer outdoors, to a garage or a basement and place it on a concrete floor.

Lay the hinge pin on its side on the floor and strike the middle of the pin with the hammer. This will put a nice bend in the hinge. Tap the hinge pin back into the hinge and operate the door.

The bent hinge pin should produce enough resistance that the door will not move unless you or someone else operates it.
