The centrepiece of the piazza is the magnificent St. This church is so named because it houses the body of Saint Mark. The basilica we see today was commissioned by Doge Domenico Contarini in the 11 th Century and was the third shrine to Saint Mark built at the site. The basilica is built in the shape of the Greek cross with a dome positioned above each arm and the central crossing point.
The interior of the church is like a jewellery box, with vast expanses of the walls decorated in glittering, golden mosaics. Mosaics cover around 40, square feet of wall space, with each tiled image depicting a religious event or biblical story. Having been seized several times during wars and battles, these represent the power of the Venetian Republic. The origin of the horses is unknown, but they could have been made in ancient Greece as early as the 4 th century BC.
Originally stolen from Constantinople in , the horses remained in Venice for years until they were looted by Napoleon in They were finally returned by the Duke of Wellington after he defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo.
This square is the only square which officially is called "Piazza". All other squares in Venice are called "Campi". The famous Campanile di San Marco is the bell tower of the Basilica. It's an outstanding landmark in Venice. The square is located between the Doge's Palace and the Jacopo Sansovino's library. The Piazza San Marco holds several buildings and important monuments. Besides the campanile, the Lion of Venice has its place on the eastern column on the square.
The city of Venice sets official rates for gondola rides, typically a rate for 40 minutes, then additional increments of 20 minutes.
